Our Erasmus+ Experience in North Macedonia: Learning through Positive Discipline

From April 23rd to 29th, we — four students from the 8th and 9th grades in Portugal — had the amazing opportunity to take part in an Erasmus+ exchange program in Kicevo, North Macedonia. The project focused on Positive Discipline and brought together students and teachers from Portugal, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, France, and the host country, North Macedonia.

Our journey didn’t start as planned. Unfortunately, we missed our connecting flight and had to spend an unexpected day in a small airport about 60 km from Paris. Because of that, we arrived in North Macedonia one day late and missed the first day of activities. Still, when we finally got there, we were welcomed with open arms and quickly felt part of the group.
We were hosted by incredibly kind families who made us feel at home. Two of us stayed in one house, and the other two in another. They helped us to adapt quickly, and it was a great experience to live with local families and learn about their culture and daily life.

During the week, we participated in many workshops focused on emotions, empathy, and communication. We especially enjoyed the creative sessions inspired by emotions. There were also art activities, team games, and group discussions about inclusion and respecting others. In one workshop, “See the face behind the label”, we reflected on how we judge people without knowing their stories. Another session, “Nurse your emotion”, helped us understand and manage our feelings.
On Saturday night, we received our participation certificates and celebrated with all the students and teachers at a festive dinner with music and dancing. It was amazing!

The last two days were unforgettable. On Sunday, we visited Skopje, the capital city, where we saw the house of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, explored the old town, and had some free time. On Monday, we went to the beautiful city of Ohrid by the lake. We had a guided tour and even enjoyed a boat ride on the crystal-clear water.
This Erasmus+ experience was truly special. Even with the challenges at the beginning, we learned a lot about ourselves, others, and the importance of positive discipline. We made new friends from all over Europe, improved our English, and created memories we will never forget.
We hope to take part in this project again. We are looking forward to welcoming our friends here in Portugal, and we will give them the same care and kindness we received, so they feel truly at home!
Thank you Kicevo, North Macedonia, for this amazing adventure!
